The render response supports portlet internationalization by providing two methods for determining the locale of the render response and the character encoding used by the render response s PrintWriter object.

This illustration takes us into the realms of student record systems. These days, it s typical for courses to be assessed in several ways, which all add up to a final result. At the start of a course, instructors are required to declare the components that will contribute to the assessment. The students marks are recorded throughout the semester and then totaled up at the end according to the weights that were specified. For example, consider the extract from a spreadsheet containing the marks for a course on Programming Languages in Figure 10-1. We can deduce that the assessment for the course consisted of: Five laboratories (or labs) (2 percent each) A midterm evaluation consisting of a laboratory component (10 percent) and a theory component (15 percent) An assignment that is a take-home laboratory (10 percent) An examination consisting of a laboratory component (15 percent) and a theory component (40 percent)

From the columns, we can see that the total of the labs is important, as is the mark obtained from the lab and theory tests done in the middle of the term (the midterm assessment). Other calculations are the averages for the lab work and the theory work, and of course the final result. Those who have worked with spreadsheets of this complexity will know that the process can be tedious and error-prone. An alternative is to create a program that will process the results in a customized way. To drive such a program, we can define a notation that specifies the weight of each mark and whether it is categorized as Theory or Lab, Midterm, or Exam. The Midterm and Exam can, as shown in the illustration, be further subdivided into Lab and Theory components. Assignments are takehome labs and fall under the Lab category. Portlets can use JavaScript in their content markup fragments, just like any other web page. One unique problem with content fragments in a portal page is that more than one instance of a portlet may be running. This means that any JavaScript variables or named HTML elements will appear more than once on the same page, which leads to unpredictable results. For instance, if you are using JavaScript mouse rollover code that sets the source URL for an HTML image, an image in another portlet might change instead. Two portlets developed independently may also inadvertently use the same names in their JavaScript code. To solve this problem, the designers of the portlet API added the concept of namespaces to the render response. The portal assigns each portlet on the portal page a unique name, even if it is the same Java class as another portlet on the page. The actual name used by the portal does not matter for the portlet developer, because the getNamespace() method on the RenderResponse interface returns the name. The JavaScript methods, JavaScript variables, and any HTML elements referenced in JavaScript should begin with this namespace where they appear in the page.

The event handler will contain the current XAML element in its sender argument, and an errorArgs object containing details of the error. The errorArgs argument contains three properties: errorType, errorMessage, and errorCode.
